Kidney stones are a very common health problem. They form from the chemicals in urine, such as uric acid, phosphorous, calcium and oxalic acid. Other common causes of kidney stones are excessive consumption of vitamin D, a mineral imbalance, dehydration, gout and an improper diet.

Irrespective of the size of the kidney stones, they can cause severe pain. Other symptoms include a desire to urinate frequently, painful urination, nausea, vomiting and excessive sweating.

In addition to conventional medications, a majority of cases can be treated with the help of natural ingredients as well. Many of them also will help prevent stones from developing in the future.

1. Hydration

It’s always a good idea to drink lots of water. However, when you have kidney stones or if you think that you might be susceptible to them, it’s absolutely critical to keep adequate fluids running through your system in order to flush out the minerals and other substances that cause stones to form. If you don’t have the time (or patience) to measure and track your daily water intake, simply remember this general rule: The darker your urine is, the more water you need. When your urine comes out clear or close to it, you know you’re drinking enough.

2. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar contains citric acid. Citric acid helps to dissolve kidney stones. Apple cider vinegar can help alkalize blood and urine and increase stomach acids to prevent the formation of new stones. In addition to flushing out the kidneys, apple cider vinegar can help ease pain caused by the stones.To reap these benefits, add 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to 6-8 ounces of purified water. Drink this mixture throughout the day.You shouldn’t consume more than one 8-ounce glass of this mixture per day. If ingested in larger amounts, apple cider vinegar can lead to low levels of potassium and osteoporosis. People with diabetes should exercise caution when drinking this mixture. Monitor your blood sugar levels carefully throughout the day.

You shouldn’t drink this mixture if you’re taking:

  • Insulin
  • Digoxin (Digox)
  • Diuretics, such as spironolactone (Aldactone)

3. Lemon Juice with Olive Oil

The combination of lemon juice and olive oil is traditionally used as a home remedy to expel gallbladder stones but it can also be used to treat kidney stones. The citric acid present in lemons helps break down calcium-based kidney stones and stops further growth.

  • Take four tablespoons or a quarter cup of fresh lemon juice.
  • Add an equal amount of olive oil.
  • Drink this mixture followed by plenty of water.
  • Do this two to three times a day, up to three days. You need not continue this remedy if you pass the stones in a single dose.

Warning: This remedy may not be suitable for passing large kidney stones. Make sure you consult a doctor before taking this remedy.

4. Pomegranate Juice

Pomegranate juice can help improve overall kidney function, as well as flush stones and other toxins from your system.It also lowers your urine’s acidity level. Lower acidity levels reduce your risk for future kidney stones. There’s no limit to how much pomegranate juice you can drink throughout the day.

You shouldn’t drink pomegranate juice if you’re taking:

  • Medications changed by the liver
  • Blood pressure medications, such as chlorothiazide (Diuril)
  • Rosuvastatin (Crestor)

5. Nettle Leaf

The nettle leaf helps maintain the flow of water through the kidneys and bladder, thus promoting smooth urination. At the same time, nettle leaf helps keep crystals from forming into stones and keeps bacteria away. Nettle tea will also enhance the benefits of water by acting as a natural diuretic.

  • Add two teaspoons of dried nettle leaf to a cup of hot water.
  • Let it steep for 10 minutes and then strain it.
  • Drink two to three cups of nettle tea daily for several weeks.

6. Kidney Beans

The shape of this bean may remind you of it’s healing potential. Kidney beans are an excellent source of magnesium, which helps reduce symptoms associated with kidney stones. Traditionally the pods were used as a medicinal tonic. Try removing the beans from inside the pods, and then boil the pods in purified hot water for six hours. This liquid can be strained through cheese cloth, cooled and taken throughout the day for one day to ease kidney stone pain.

7. Basil Juice

Basil contains acetic acid, which helps to break down the kidney stones and helps to reduce pain. It also lowers uric acid levels, which reduces your risk for future stones. Use fresh or dried basil leaves to make a tea and drink several cups per day. You may also juice fresh basil or add it to a smoothie.

You shouldn’t use medicinal basil juice for more than six weeks at a time. Extended use may lead to:

  • Low blood sugar
  • Low blood pressure
  • Increased bleeding

8. Celery Juice

Celery juice clears away toxins that contribute to kidney stone formation. It also helps flush out the body so you can pass the stone. Blend one or more celery stalks with water, and drink the juice throughout the day.

You shouldn’t drink this mixture if you have:

  • Any bleeding disorder
  • Low blood pressure
  • A scheduled surgery

You also shouldn’t drink this mixture if you’re taking:

  • Levothyroxine (Synthroid)
  • Lithium (Lithane)
  • Medications that increase sun sensitivity, such as isotretinoin (Sotret)
  • Sedative medications, such as alprazolam (Xanax)

9. Watermelon

Watermelon is a great way to treat kidney stones composed of calcium and magnesium phosphates and carbonates. The potassium present in watermelon is an essential ingredient for healthy kidneys. It helps regulate and maintain the acid level in urine. Along with potassium, watermelon also contains a high concentration of water, which helps in flushing out stones from the kidneys. Eating watermelon regularly can help greatly in the treatment as well as prevention of kidney stones. You can have watermelon seed tea as well.

10. Change in diet

Unhealthy food is a primary cause of kidney stones. Cut down on the amount of soda and energy drinks you consume. Avoid processed food and alcoholic beverages. Add more fibrous fruits and veggies to your diet, especially those listed above.
